This film sketches the rough journey of an adolescence trying not to
lose control. This is the portrait of Espoir, 18, who lives in Lomé,
capital of Togo. Camera in hand, I’m following him wherever he wants to
take me. His body sets my frames in an elusive city. Espoir winds his
way between friends, girlfriends and parties, seeking desires and
meaning. He experiments in a quest to find himself. He wants to leave
the camera behind. He doesn’t need to be staged. His desire for
independence is stronger. He is in fury, it growls deep inside him. That
may be what keeps him alive.

Dieser Film skizziert den holprigen Weg eines Jugendlichen, der sich nicht
unterkriegen lassen will. Er ist das Porträt von Espoir, 18 Jahre alt, der
in Lomé, der Hauptstadt von Togo, lebt. Ich folge ihm mit der Kamera, wohin
er bereit ist, mich mitzunehmen. Espoirs Körper bestimmt den Rhythmus meiner
Bilder in einer Stadt, die schwer zu fassen scheint. Zwischen Freunden,
Freundinnen und Partys beweist er sich, sucht Begehren und Sinn. Er
experimentiert auf der Suche nach sich selbst. Manchmal möchte er die Kamera
abschütteln. Er schert sich nicht um meine Inszenierung, sein Drang nach
Unabhängigkeit ist stärker. Tief in seinem Inneren grollt es, doch
vielleicht ist es genau das, was ihn am Leben hält.

“Granma Nineteen and the Soviet’s Secret” is an adaptation of the Angolan
poet and novelist Ondjaki's book. Directed by João Ribeiro from Mozambique
it was co-produced with Portugal and Brazil.
In a small coastal African village, the construction of a huge monument
threatens to destroy the houses of its inhabitants. Jaki and his best friend
Pi devise a plan to implode the monument and thus save the neighborhood. A
plan doomed to failure, if not for the unexpected intervention of a
secretive Soviet man.
“Granma Nineteen and the Soviet’s Secret” ist eine Adaption des Buches des
angolanischen Dichters und Schriftstellers Ondjaki. Unter der Regie von João
Ribeiro aus Mosambik wurde sie gemeinsam mit Portugal und Brasilien
produziert.
In einem kleinen afrikanischen Küstendorf droht der Bau eines riesigen
Denkmals die Häuser seiner BewohnerInnen zu zerstören. Jaki und sein bester
Freund Pi entwickeln einen Plan, um das Denkmal implodieren zu lassen und so die
Nachbarschaft zu retten. Ein Plan, der ohne die unerwartete Intervention
eines geheimen sowjetischen Mannes zum Scheitern verurteilt wäre.

A significant “First” usually merits the designation of historic.
The first formal protest against racial discrimination by inspirational
civil rights leader – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. – fits the definition of
historic.
[…] “One can never say accurately that the site of the first formal protest
by the most consequential, transformative person of an era has 'minimal'
historic importance without either being deceptive or ignorant of American
history,” Dr. Molefi Kete Asante said. Professor Asante is Chair of the
Department of Africology and African American Studies at Temple University
in Philadelphia, Pa, located 19 kilometers from the site of King’s first
protest.
Preservation Office authorities used their dismissal of King’s “Firsts” to
justify their denial of an application for New Jersey State Historic
Registry listing of the house in Camden, NJ where King both planned the
1950 protest and finalized its details hours before taking that action. […]
Linn Washington Jr., has researched and reported on Dr. King’s New Jersey
protest since 1985. Washington, an award-winning investigative reporter, is
a Professor of Journalism at Temple University, USA.

Der erste formelle Protest gegen Rassendiskriminierung durch den
inspirierenden Bürgerrechtsführer – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. – entspricht
